If you ever need to install packages (built-in), but cannot use Synaptic, then here are some useful tips on using apt-get in Ubuntu:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. sudo apt-get install package<\/em><\/strong> – Installs package<\/em> and it’s dependencies<\/li>\n
  2. sudo apt-get remove package<\/em><\/strong> – Removes package<\/em>, but you need to use #4 to remove unused dependencies<\/li>\n
  3. sudo apt-get update<\/strong> – Updates the package list (checks for updates)<\/li>\n
  4. sudo apt-get autoremove<\/strong> – See #2, removes leftover dependencies<\/li>\n
  5. sudo apt-get clean<\/strong> – Removes leftover cached packages. Use this to free up space on your root partition<\/li>\n
  6. sudo apt-get -s ACTION <\/em><\/strong>– Performs a simulation run of ACTION<\/em>. Does not actually do anything.<\/li>\n
  7. sudo apt-get -d ACTION<\/em><\/strong> – Downloads the package only. Does not actually install it. Use ACTION<\/em> with install.

  8. sudo apt-get -f install – <\/strong>Fixes broken dependencies.<\/li>\n
  9. sudo apt-get autoclean<\/strong> – See #5 above.<\/li>\n
  10. sudo apt-get purge<\/strong> – Remove and purge packages.<\/li>\n
  11. sudo apt-get moo – <\/strong>Self-explaining. (Will format your hard disk and render it unusable.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
