{"id":43,"date":"2008-09-21T12:40:37","date_gmt":"2008-09-21T16:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.compdigitec.com\/labs\/?p=43"},"modified":"2008-09-21T12:40:37","modified_gmt":"2008-09-21T16:40:37","slug":"using-apt-get-in-ubuntu-linux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.compdigitec.com\/labs\/2008\/09\/21\/using-apt-get-in-ubuntu-linux\/","title":{"rendered":"Using apt-get in Ubuntu Linux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you ever need to install packages (built-in), but cannot use Synaptic, then here are some useful tips on using apt-get in Ubuntu:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get install <em>package<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Installs <em>package<\/em> and it&#8217;s dependencies<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get remove <em>package<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Removes <em>package<\/em>, but you need to use #4 to remove unused dependencies<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get update<\/strong> &#8211; Updates the package list (checks for updates)<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get autoremove<\/strong> &#8211; See #2, removes leftover dependencies<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get clean<\/strong> &#8211; Removes leftover cached packages. Use this to free up space on your root partition<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get -s <em>ACTION <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; Performs a simulation run of <em>ACTION<\/em>. Does not actually do anything.<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get -d <em>ACTION<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Downloads the package only. Does not actually install it. Use <em>ACTION<\/em> with install.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get -f install &#8211; <\/strong>Fixes broken dependencies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get autoclean<\/strong> &#8211; See #5 above.<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get purge<\/strong> &#8211; Remove and purge packages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>sudo apt-get moo &#8211; <\/strong>Self-explaining.
