OpenGL acceleration in Debian/Ubuntu

Getting “Error: couldn’t get an RGB, Double-buffered visual“?
1) Install video driver
Example:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel # or whatever nvidia package for your card
2) Install OpenGL and related libraries/tools:
sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx mesa-utils
3) Restart X server or restart computer:
sudo shutdown now -r
4) Test acceleration:
glxgears glxinfo
Sample working output:
